The Brunei constitution of 1959: An Inside history

The 20th century history of Brunei Darussalam provides a unique case of decolonisation in the British Empire. The main arena for the tug-of-war between colonial and nationalist forces was the series of negotiations which culminated in the promulgation of the 1959 constitution. The struggle for supremacy between British colonialism and the traditional Malay monarchy was not only a struggle between conflicting economic and political interests, and between competing political ideologies, but also a duel between two powerful personalities: Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddien III and the British High Commissioner-cum-Governor Sir Anthony Foster Abell. To provide an insider's view of the period and of the personalities involved, the author has consulted British and Brunei records—notes, official dispatches and private correspondence—and has interviewed Bruneian personages who took part in the events.
